As noticed by 9 to 5 Mac (http://www.9to5mac.com/57822/apple-looking-to-radically-improve-ios-maps-and-location-services/), Apple has posted a new job listing (http://jobs.apple.com/index.ajs?BID=1&method=mExternal.showJob&RID=75809) for an iOS Maps Application Developer who can help "radically improve" the Maps application and other location-based services.The posting is reminiscent of a late 2009 (http://www.macrumors.com/2009/11/27/apple-to-take-iphones-maps-app-to-the-next-level/) job listing looking for a candidate to help "take Maps to the next level". Apple has also beefed up its maps, navigation and location-based services capabilities with the acquisition of Placebase (http://www.macrumors.com/2009/09/30/apple-acquired-mapping-company-placebase-in-july/) and Poly9 (http://www.macrumors.com/2010/07/14/apple-acquires-web-mapping-firm-poly9/) over the past couple of years. From the very beginning, Apple has relied on Google's technology for maps and location-based services on iOS devices. But as relations between the two companies have soured among increasing competitiveness in mobile devices, Apple is clearly trying to distance itself from Google somewhat by developing its own unique offerings.

I seriously had a dream last night that maps was updated to 3D and you could use the gyroscope etc to fly through optional routes before chosing which one to take ahha.

Folks,
Even though I believe .mac to be overpriced for the value, after buying a couple of iMacs for my extended family, I decided that it made sense to by a Family Pack license of .mac because the members of my extended family aren't that computer savvy, so making photocasting and sharing files as easy as possible was a priority.
All the retailers I called had no stock on .mac retail boxes and told me they were on backorder. After placing an order a few days ago via the Apple Store online, the original ship date was estimated 1-3 weeks, but my order now shows an estimated ship date of October 24th.
I can only hope that this means that the .mac service and retail boxes are going to get released in late October with new functionality. I'm not going to hold my breath, but I can't figure why something as simple as a .mac retail box with an activation code is backordered more than a month since placing my order unless something was afoot.
I'll secretly wish for Merom MBPs at the same time of course. :D

"The ONLY thing that matters in these kind of numbers is whether or not you can run an application on it." ---If it cant make a call its a different device PERIOD.
What difference does it being a phone make? If Mac OS was the most popular OS on laptops, would that make any difference? I guess it would be a cool talking point, but the fact would remain that Windows is still more popular overall.
Android having a larger percentage of phone penetration (versus OS penetration) is a similar figure. Cool talking point, maybe, but absolutely useless as an actual data point.
On the points that matter (OS penetration, individual device sales, developer revenue, available software), iOS is ahead.

This had better fix the battery drain. Had enough of it now.
Turn off ping - it's on by default. You can turn it off in the restrictions. I never used it but it was turned on by default. Did wonders to my battery life.

I use TunesArt (http://www.jibapps.com/products/tunesart/). It's an iTunes plugin that lets you know what song is currently playing and can fetch up lyrics automatically. It can do a lot more too.

It's not the name that's hindering Apple's online efforts, it's the pricing, features and reliability.
I just hope they make iDisk as good or better as DropBox. iDisk in its current iteration is just awful.

How about getting two notifications. Try telling me what the first one was? That's right, you will have no clue. Try using Android or WebOS for about 10 minutes and you will realize how obtrusive and useless notifications are in iOS.

On the other hand if they've patented a method for botching your alarms every time the clocks go back/forward they may be onto something.

The 2.0T engine is cool, since it effectively did about 230hp at the crank, very impressive for a 4cyl engine. It made the V6 look bad.
My qualm isn't the engine, it was the way they packaged it - and they DID fix this on the later runs (I think on the 2009 models you could get the I4s equipped every bit as well as the V6).
But in it led me to buying a 300C instead - and after hearing about stuff on vwvortex I really didn't feel bad about that decision. As for the 5cyl, it is competent but I don't see the point to it - people should be buying a TDI instead, and the 5cyl is a noisy odd engine. >>
